This isn't the same OSU

If you aren't interested in football, just skip to the bottom to find my rather boring update on the McDonald's cheese burger.

Now remember... I look at everything through orange glasses(even though I try to be objective).

Despite the lose today by OSU, and despite my disappointment, things still look great for OSU. I really thought OSU could win this game, but like I did before the Mizzou game, I tried to limit my enthusiasm b/c I thought maybe, just maybe, the national media knew what they were talking about. But again, we proved the media is clueless. OSU lost by 4 points, which means the game was closer than anyone(aka, the national media) thought it would be.

OSU only lost by 4 despite:

  1. A fumble inside the 15 yard line, on what looked like a run that would have been a touchdown.
  2. A fantom pass interference call on Ricky Price that would have put Texas in 3rd and long, but instead they got a first down. They later scored a TD on this drive. Ricky Price DID NOT TOUCH the WR, AND the WR pushed off. Pathetic call.
  3. A dumb, dumb personal foul by Andre Sexton. He gave no choice to the ref when he grazed Colt McCoy's facemask. The rule is stupid, but you have to play by the rules. On the play, Perrish Cox got an intercept that was wiped away by the personal foul. A few plays later, Texas got a touchdown. This was a huge point in the game.
Anyways, down to the actual game and what I learned.
  • Oklahoma State is a lot better AS A TEAM than anyone has been giving them credit for. After Mizzou the media was talking about how OSU played a perfect game, blah, blah. While I argued that wasn't the case in that game, that definitaley wasn't the case this game. OSU got penalties at horrible times that killed drives, the previously mentioned fumble, and some bad play calling on top of it(Mike Gundy admitted it himself). Even with that, OSU had a drive to win the game but couldn't convert.
  • Kendall Hunter is as good as OSU fans have been hyping him to be. Texas was a top 5 rushing defense before this game and Kendall Hunter ran circles around them. He is the best running back in the nation. Here are the 5 leading rushers in the NCAA:
Name Team G
Rush Yds Y/G Avg TD
Javon Ringer MISt 9
300 1373 152.56 4.6 16
Donald Brown Conn 8
235 1320 165.00 5.6 14
Shonn Greene Iowa 9
202 1371 152.33 6.8 14
Kendall Hunter OKSt 8
169 1116 139.50 6.6 10
Tyrell Fenroy ULL 8
152 1098 137.25 7.2 12

Kendall is #4, but has 30+ carries less than the guys above him. He makes cuts and extends runs. He is very impressive and could be a high draft pick

  • Kinda of on the same lines as Kendall Hunter, this offensive line is very good. They did a great job of protecting Zac and opening holes for Kendall. You may say "Zac got sacked 5 times!!!" to counter that, but I will explain this later on.
  • Dez Bryant is getting tons of respect. Texas double teamed him all day, and he still had 80 yards. He proved he can "out physical" even the best athletes. We need to get the ball in his hands a lot more often. Working the ball to Pettigrew was working well today, and THAT needs to happen every game. It was great to have him back.
  • Zac Robinson is overrated. Yeah, I said it. He isn't very accurate. He looks at the first option way too long on most plays then panics, which means he rolls out and throws a bad pass or tries to run. He seems to be holding onto the ball longer than he use to. His arm isn't as strong as we once thought. He floats a lot of deep balls and under throws most of them. He is a very good QB, and in "normal" years would be a top 2 or 3 QB in the Big 12. But this year I would rather have at least 4 QBs before Zac(Harrell, Bradford, McCoy, Reesing). I still love him, but he has plenty of weaknesses and I think he has been part of the reason for our offense stalling out at times.
  • The defense showed me a lot today. McCoy dominated them, but I still was impressed. I saw guys flying to ball and making hits all day. The defensive line is getting better and better, but they did not get enough pressure on Colt today. Ugo Chinasa and Jeray Chatham have been awesome. The linebackers have impressed me. I use to think they were the weakness of the defensive, but their improvement has been remarkable. Orie Lemon is turning into a star. Today I saw more plays made by TJ Bell and Quintan Moore. Freshman Victor Johnson played, and while I didn't see him making tons of plays, him being on the field shows tons of promise.
  • Mike Gundy is growing into a good coach. He struggled his first 2 years with bad decisions and teams that didn't make plays when they needed to. He is doing something right with this team... they make plays when called on and have improved more than I could have ever imagined. I can see OSU winning out. I am not afraid of Tech, b/c I think our defense is better than theirs. But if our offense doesn't "hit its stride" before that game, it will be tough to keep up, even with a better defense.
  • Texas is a very good team. Colt McCoy is better than I thought he was(and I thought he was pretty darn good). I saw maybe 2 bad throws all day. The guy throws the ball... hard. He does not miss his receivers. After watching him last year, I was not impressed at all. But this year he is noticably stronger and more poised. I think he wins the Heisman.
To kind of sum everything up, I will say this season is going better than I ever thought it could. OSU still has a shot to win the Big 12 Championship! All the Cowboys need to do is win out and hope Texas Tech beats Texas next week. It will be Texas' first road test, so no telling how they respond. If OSU wins out, that puts OSU, Tech, & Texas tied with 1 loss in the Big 12. The tie breakers come down to your ranking in the BCS and IMO OSU would be the highest one. OSU has already lost, so both of those teams would have lost later in the year. And look at OSU's resume if that happens:
  • Beaten Mizzou ON THE ROAD, #3 at the time
  • Beaten Tech ON THE ROAD, in the top 3, as they would have just beat Texas
  • Beaten OU, who is at least top 5, probably top 3.
  • Lost to Texas, ON THE ROAD, by only 4 points... at the time the #1 team
That is an impressive resume... especially all the road games. I doubt this will happen b/c I wouldn't count on Texas losing any games(although I can see Tech beating them after the performance against Kansas... the offense is finally playing better for them). And even if Tech beat Texas, I am doubting more and more that OSU can beat Texas Tech on the road.

Anyways... this isn't the same OSU... this OSU steps up in big games and is the real deal. This OSU is around for good.

NOW, lets discuss this McDonalds cheesburger. Well, ok, here are the pictures

You will notice he mold in the last 2. That is the only difference. Everything else was normal. I was quite disappointed, but at least we know one ingredient of McDonald's food is okay to eat. I'm still not sure about the rest of it, but hey... at least the bread won't kill you!

Through crimson glasses I don't see things essentially differently. As a Sooner fan, I will warn you of what may soon become evident to Cowboys:
An adoring national press is a liability because: 1. It paints a red target on your back for the crosshairs of your opponents. 2. Players begin to believe the press on how super-wonderful they are and let down in intensity. 3. Urealistic expectations inhibit fan's ability to just enjoy a great 11-2 season. The only thing you gain is, on the rare year where you are in the top 4 or 5 in an ambiguous BCS, you get the boost in the polls that gets you into championship games for which you are underqualified.

Until the end of the Red-River-Shootout-Junior, I thought OSU might be building a OU 2000 style national championship roll, where all along the way they would be under-rated and expected to fail. The chemistry a team can develop in that scenario is much better than what is possible when everybody expects you to win every game by double digits.

Moral of the story: Be careful what you wish for.

Will the Sooners be dogs at Stillwater? If the defense does not remarkably improve over the next weeks, I say yes. And if not, I'd put a 20 on the bad guys.
